7. Robot & Frank (2012)

“The human brain, a lovely piece of hardware.”

One of the great under-appreciated films of 2012, Robot & Frank provides a slick, heartfelt portrayal of the bond between man and machine. Fearing the well-being of his father, Frank’s son gifts the ex-cat burglar a robot caretaker in the hopes that the machine will help him with his onsetting dementia. Resentful at first, Frank soon discovers that he can use the robot to help him steal jewellery.

Robot (Peter Sarsgaard) takes the form of a modern day level of robotic advancement. Although lovable, Robot never reaches the heights of sentience found with other entries in this list, which although a shame, isn’t really an issue. It’s the relationship between Robot and his new human associate that’s at the forefront of this buddy movie, and allows this sci-fi to be grounded in something more intimate than advancing technology.

It’s refreshing to watch a take on AI that doesn’t in some way include the destruction of humans. Go Robot! (and Frank!).
