10 Best Artificial Intelligence Movies Of The Last Decade
2. Ex Machina (2015)
“One day the AIs are going to look back on us the same way we look at fossil skeletons on the plains of Africa. An upright ape living in dust with crude language and tools, all set for extinction.”
Ex Machina may just be Alex Garland’s best piece of work, which is quite the accolade considering he’s the writer behind cult classics such as 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Dredd. Pretty damn impressive, wouldn’t you say…
… Yes, you would. And so would we.
This suspenseful contained thriller is everything that the previously mentioned The Machine (2015) wanted to be (sexy robots, anyone?), and much more. Where The Machine failed to find its footing, Ex Machina uncompromisingly succeeded in its attempt to turn the complexities of the Turing test into an interesting, exciting, and provocative story.
The witty dialogue and clash of ideologies allow this contained masterpiece to be thoroughly enjoyable throughout, never once relying on the hi-tech glitz that the sci-fi genre often uses as a crutch. Well, except for the aesthetics of Ava (Alicia Vikander), which are both appropriate and visually appealing.
Fun fact: Domhall Gleeson (Caleb) played a fully synthetic AI in Charlie Brooker’s outstanding series Black Mirror, and his performance was incredible. So, if you’re really into this sentient machinery business then definitely check it out.
