10 Best Avenger Actor Team-Ups Outside Of The MCU

4. The Hurt Locker - Renner And Mackie

Wind River Jeremy Renner Elizabeth Olsen
Voltage Pictures

While Jeremy Renner's short appearance as Ronin in Avengers Endgame was a sight to behold, showing us the crazed result of him losing his entire family to the snap, nothing can compare to his captivating performance as Sergeant William James, leader of a U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit.

The insanely likable Anthony Mackie also stars alongside as Sergeant J. T. Sanborn, yet even with the irresistible charm that emanates from the pair, the movie is a harsh and intense showcase of the severe psychological reactions to war. The Hurt Locker depicts the stress of combat becoming too much for some, or like an addiction for others.

Renner's character is a risk-taking, reckless, and damn near suicidal bomb disposal expert, who clashes with his subordinates for obvious reasons, especially Mackie's character for whom he's basically the bane of his life. For Mackie, he finds it all too much in the end and, unable to deal with the pressure, returns home to have a son. Renner's character on the other hand does also return home to his ex-wife (Evangeline Lily, who happens to be the Wasp in the Avengers) and infant son but finds himself drawn back to the Army after becoming quickly discontent with civilian life.

But it's all good though, both are Avengers now, both sided with the wrong team in Civil War - yeah I said it - and both have their own Disney spin-off shows on the way. Thankfully, the pair get along better than their Hurt Locker counterparts, and have also managed to handle stress better.
