Thanos spends a huge chunk of Infinity War's runtime tracking down the soul stone. He has to track down Gamora and get the stone's location out of her, before dragging her along with him out to Vormir and proving his worth before disembodied Red Skull in order to earn the stone. He even winds up sacrificing Gamora, the only person in the entire universe that he truly loves, in order to obtain the stone.

After throwing her over the ledge, the music swells as a giant blue portal opens in the sky above him. Then, the film abruptly cuts to black. When it comes back, viewers are treated to a shot of what looks to be the larger cosmos, before the camera pans up to reveal it is Thanos laying in a lake of water reflecting the cosmos above him. He wakes up, now holding the soul stone in his hand.

Here's the thing: something else happened on Vormir.

With the abrupt cut to black, the Russos are specifically excluding information that will definitely become much more important in Avengers 4. Because the question becomes; who is Red Skull working for and who was Thanos really proving himself to? Red Skull mentions that the soul stone holds a special power over the others, is it possible that the soul stone is the equivalent of the ego stone in the MCU? Could Nemesis herself have been in the portal opening up above Thanos on Vormir? Or could it have been another classic Marvel villain manipulating him, like Galactus?

Put good money on the fact that Avengers 4 inevitably returns to this moment on Vormir, in one way or another.
