10 Best B-Movie Horrors From The '80s

9. The Beyond (1981)

Lucio Fulci's The Beyond came at the very tail end of a string of Italian-American co-productions that dominated the 1970s. Fulci thrived with his unapologetic gore and stunning visual imagery, but by 1981, tastes were beginning to change and The Beyond received considerably less attention than his previous offerings,

The Beyond tells the story of Liza, a young woman that unexpectedly inherits a run-down Louisiana hotel. Unbeknownst to Liza the hotel houses the 7 doors to hell and one door is open.

What is there to say about this surrealist masterpiece that hasn't already been said? The Beyond is a stunning film and it's quite a shame that it was so little seen at the time.

Fulci more than lives up to his "Godfather of Gore" moniker with an impressive amount of blood and practical effects: Eyes are gouged, faces are melted and eaten by spiders... these set pieces are just sheer nightmare fuel.

The Beyond also transcends its B-Movie branding with a wonderfully bizarre atmosphere - throughout the film the viewer is never quite sure what is real and what is not. The sinister forces beneath the hotel play with time and get into the mind, leaving both the characters and the audience equally unnerved.

This surrealist, downbeat nightmare is worth your time and is definitely reams above the B-Movie schlock it's tarred as.

I'm a wannabe author with one completed manuscript submitted to a few agents. Please cross your fingers for me! I am currently working on my second book. If you wanna talk horror or need any movie recommendations, I'm your man! Give me a follow on Instagram... since there doesn't seem to be a section for that in the "socials" tab @that_horror_nerd
