10 Best B-Movie Horrors From The '80s
8. Without Warning (1982)
Following the success of Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 classic, it was inevitable that filmmakers the world over would attempt their own Alien-style tale... but naturally the results varied in quality.
Greydon Clark's Without Warning is definitely one of the stronger attempts, mainly because the film knows its limitations and doesn't attempt anything too ambitious. The horror focuses on a small rural community that finds itself suddenly under attack by blood-sucking alien parasites.
Without Warning stands out from a crowd of similar movies for a few reasons, the first being the lush cinematography. The flick is beautifully photographed by Halloween's Dean Cundey with bright colors, dappled sunlight and the iconic blue-cast that made Carpenter's film look so sophisticated.
This movie also benefits from stellar performances by an incredible cast, as Clark was able to get legendary actors on the cheap as their careers faltered from their 1950s heyday. Consequently familiar faces from B-movie cinema including Jack Palance, Martin Landau, Neville Brand and Cameron Mitchell all show up for stellar appearances.
Each performer offers their all, even if the job was only taken to pay the bills. Landau in particular stands out as Sarge, a PTSD-ridden veteran who takes upon himself to vanquish their alien foes.
Add to this some impressive creature design effects on a tight budget and you have a surprisingly charming little B-movie that's definitely worth a look.
