2. Eraserhead

For a feature film debut, it doesn't get much more demented than David Lynch's Eraserhead.

Notoriously difficult to get off the ground, it took Lynch several years to get his movie in front of an audience. And when he did, the picture didn't disappoint. In fact, the exact specifics of how Lynch and his team crafted the eerie child at the centre of Eraserhead is still one shrouded in mystery to this very day.

That child is the offspring of John Nance's Henry and Charlotte Stewart's Mary X, and it is just one of the many outright nuts elements of the movie. Seriously, Eraserhead is constantly a big ol' bag of crazy from start to finish.

Stepping back from the shock and terror of Eraserhead, the film essentially comes down to the fear of parenthood and what life-changing questions are often conjured up by that revelation. But while that theme is what the audience is meant to ponder come Eraserhead's close, it's the shocking image of Henry and Mary X's squirming child that is the biggest take-home from the film.

David Lynch would go on to oversee fantastic offerings such as The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Mullholland Drive, and of course Twin Peaks, and this impressive career was all jump-started into life with the twisted action of Eraserhead.
