You'd think a trip to a cabin in the woods would be the perfect getaway. Just you, and maybe some friends, taking a break from society and getting a little peace and quiet. What could possibly go wrong?

If horror has taught us anything, it's that nowhere is safe. Not your home, not work, not school, and for sure not the middle of the woods. The genre has taken this fantasy of escaping from the world and turned it into a nightmare scenario more times than you can count.

There's just so much you can do with this simple setting. The possibilities of the types of stories filmmakers can tell there are endless. As a concept itself it's a prime foundation for an excellent horror recipe. With all that said, not every cabin in the woods flick is going to be one worth remembering. For every good example there's five not-so-good ones that exist as lazy attempts to replicate what's been done well in the past.

So, let's take a look at the ones that got it right with the ten best cabin in the woods horror movies.

10. Cabin Fever

Eden Lake
Lionsgate

Cabin Fever might not be the greatest movie around, but it sure as hell is one that will stick with you.

A flesh eating virus discovers an all you can eat buffet when a group of spring breakers pick a very poor spot to take their vacation. Who will survive and what will be left of them?

The entire scenario of Cabin Fever is a nightmare. Zombies, demons, vampires, and whatever other horror creature you can come up with, in no way match the terror of your own body tearing itself apart. Even if you managed to somehow survive the situation, you probably wouldn't even want to because, well, you've been infected by a literal flesh eating virus. It tends to leave a noticeable mark.

There is some imagery in this movie that will challenge even the toughest of viewers. If one word could be used to describe it, it'd be visceral. Take the leg shaving scene for example. After watching it, you'll never look at a razor the same way again. Ew.
