10 Best CG-Free Martial Arts Movies

1. Drunken Master

Just as it was inevitable that Bruce Lee would make an appearance on this list, so too is it impossible to write about the best CG-free martial arts movies of all time without mentioning Jackie Chan, a performer who has contributed more to the genre with his incredible fighting skills combined with a comedic knack on a par with the silent heroes Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. Narrowing down Chan's filmography and choosing a stand-out movie is an almost impossible task - his illustrious career features literally dozens of memorable films which combine meticulously choreographed fight scenes and elaborately staged, wince-inducing stunts with slapstick comedy and hilariously bad one-liners. Drunken Master is one of the first movies to kick start this blending of action and comedy, with Yuen Woo-ping's direction combined with Chan's youthful, exuberant performance delivering 110 minutes of some of the finest martial arts ever committed to film. The influence of Drunken Master has been felt ever since, from the numerous Hong Kong action cinema imitators to a host of video games and anime franchises which have employed the drunken fighting style. It's a classic martial arts movie which introduced the world to Jackie Chan's trademark blend of action and comedy, proving that talent trumps computer graphics and visual trickery any day of the week.
