3. Fletcher - The Gentlemen

Snatch Brad Pitt
STXfilms

Sneaky, greedy and arrogant, Fletcher is a private investigator hired by the owner of a newspaper to snoop on Mickey Pearson's (Matthew McConaughey) drug business. Instead, he spends the majority of the movie using his findings to blackmail Raymond (Charlie Hunnam) for £20 million, threatening to actually deliver what his original employer asked of him if he doesn't receive the money. From the outset, it's clear that Fletcher's main motivations are purely greed; he only interferes with the plot in order to make money, foolishly thinking he can extort a mob boss to do so.

Despite the obvious treacherous nature of his actions, Fletcher is still one of the most likeable characters in the movie, as he delivers multiple monologues and quips that are, despite Raymond's annoyed reactions, some of the funniest that The Gentlemen has to offer.

Hugh Grant plays against his type in a fascinating way throughout this movie, as the tricky, scheming scoundrel he portrays is the polar opposite from the meek and polite characters he is known for. The subplot involving Fletcher and Raymond is so captivating because of the dialogue exchanged between the two characters. Fletcher delivers speech after speech in order to annoy Raymond, who's forced to indulge Fletcher's arrogance or else risk the inner workings of his boss's business becoming public knowledge.

Even though the character is portrayed as thinking he's funnier than he actually is, that doesn't stop him from being the funniest character in the movie. If anyone other than Hugh Grant was cast in this role, then the character might not have been as likeable whilst being as smug as he is, but on the whole, it works because of just how well Hugh Grant is able to pull it off.
