10 Best Coming Of Age Horror Movies
4. It Follows
We all laughed when we first heard the premise of It Follows, but since then I like to think we’ve all grown up a bit and can see the deeper implications of it all.
It Follows gave STD a whole new meaning, introducing the now infamous idea of the sexually transmitted demon. One passed to you, you’ll be relentlessly followed by an entity shapeshifting into all different appearances. If this entity manages to reach you physically, you’re a goner.
There are lots of different interpretations of what this film is trying to say. Some of the most prominent themes include the anxiety and danger around emergent sexuality and the formation and importance of teenage friendships and relationships, staples of the ‘coming of age’ concept.
The horror elements are perfectly crafted, with a constant sense of dread keeping you on the edge of your seat. The unbelievably unnerving appearance of the entity and its constant march toward the camera puts the audience in the same position as protagonist Jay, and we’re all absolutely bloody terrified.
