10 Best Coming-Of-Age Movies Of The Decade
1. Moonlight (2016)
No one will ever forget the mistake with the envelopes at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony. It’s a shame that such an incident overshadowed the fact Moonlight’s Oscar for Best Picture was a remarkable achievement.
In contrast to many other movies that had won this award, Moonlight had a relatively small cast, crew, and budget. Despite this, however, the movie is an incredibly powerful coming-of-age tale brimming with originality and heart.
Moonlight is split into three parts and follows Chiron Harris as he develops from a child to an adolescent whilst living in Liberty City (Miami), before concluding with his life as a young adult in Atlanta (Georgia).
The dialogue between the characters is so natural the movie feels like a documentary at times, and there are plenty of moments that feel improvised by the cast.
The film also addresses a number of heavy subjects such as masculinity, sexuality, homophobia, single parenthood, and poverty. Said themes are wrapped up in a rugged, low-key aesthetic that makes the film feel wonderfully sincere, and the hypnotising soundtrack is a great addition to this tone.
For those who think the coming-of-age genre lacks variety and depth, Moonlight is the ultimate way to prove them wrong. It’s a masterpiece from start to finish.
