10 Best Creature Features Of The 1980s
7. The Blob
1958's The Blob revolves around an amoeba-like extra-terrestrial invading a small town, growing in size as it consumes its surroundings. That sci-fi horror may be iconic, but that doesn't mean it's very good. Despite the innovative premise and a few imaginative effects, the picture simply wasn't that scary.
However, the 1988 Blob remake, on the other hand, is terrifying. This time around, the blob comes across as a legitimate threat as we see victims melting in meticulous detail after being exposed to it. Another reason why the gooey villain is scarier this time is because it has a degree of intelligence. The blob strategically looms above unsuspecting victims, traps them in phone booths, hunts them through sewers, and slithers into buildings through the sink.
Then there's the special effects, with the SFX team pulling out all the stops, using animatronics, puppets, elaborate make-up, trick photography, and stop-motion to bring the amorphous mass to life. Although the remake seems to follow the same structure as before, there's a twist at the halfway point that's sure to catch many out.
For all these reasons, admiration for The Blob remake has only grown with time, much like the monster itself.
