10 Best Directorial Debut Films Of The 21st Century (So Far)
9. Deadpool
It sure was some coincidence that test footage got leaked by an anonymous source who couldn’t have possibly been Ryan Reynolds himself… nevertheless, the decision to do so undoubtedly gave Fox a kick up the backside and put the wheels in motion for Deadpool’s long-awaited solo debut to finally come to fruition.
Released in what feels like an eternity ago in 2016, Deadpool was totally unlike any superhero movie audiences had seen before as the film took total advantage of its R rating, and to great effect.
As a result, director Tim Miller and Reynolds concocted the perfect Deadpool iteration for the silver screen that was more than faithful to the abundance of source material at hand.
Not only did Reynolds perfectly embody and encapsulate the character's trademark sense of humour and chronic self-awareness, but the film as a whole is bloody fantastic, both literally and figuratively.
It must be mentioned of course that Reynolds had previously portrayed the Merc with a Mouth back in 2008 for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but the less said about that picture the better. A whole heap of faith was placed on Miller and Reynolds’ shoulders, and with one sequel down and another to go - starring Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine - you’d say it was faith well placed.
