10 Best Directors That Have Never Won An Oscar
2. Quentin Tarantino
Thought by many to be the greatest director of modern times (certainly the most distinctive), Tarantino is still without that golden statuette, despite making some of the most definitive movies of the era.
There aren’t too many movies which can be seriously talked about as the greatest movie ever; Pulp Fiction is in that esteemed category though.
It won for Best Screenplay (as did Django Unchained, Tarantino’s other win), but was passed up for Best Director. Reservoir Dogs, the Kill Bills, The Hateful Eight & Jackie Brown failed to get even nominated in any category. It feels almost like he’s being deliberately overlooked, at this point.
All of the Tarantino movies have the same, knuckle popping dialogue to them; you can see the Elmore Leonard influence in each script. While that’s helped Tarantino immeasurably with audiences, it doesn’t seem to have done him many favours with the Academy.
Similar to Scorsese not winning for so long, it seems the Oscars favour subtlety.
Copious amounts of feet closeups probably haven’t helped his cause either. The Academy doesn’t seem to have much of a problem with rape, but they draw the line at foot fetishes.
