10 Best Directors That Have Never Won An Oscar
1. Stanley Kubrick
1360869Yep, Stanley Kubrick, thought by many to be the greatest director of all time, never won an Oscar for Best Director.
It’s not just the amount of fantastic movies Kubrick has directed, it’s the sheer scale of them too. Tarantino has made a range of genres too, but they all felt quintessentially Tarantino. From Pulp Fiction to Kill Bill to Inglorious Bastards to The Hateful Eight, you know who’s behind the camera.
Kubrick disappears far easier. Greatest horror movie ever made? The Shining has to be in the conversation. Best hard sci fi flick? 2001: A Space Odyssey is a massive contender. There aren’t too many erotic thrillers around, but Eyes Wide Shut is easily the best of them.
With Full Metal Jacket, Barry Lyndon, Dr Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange all in his back catalogue too, it’s bizarre that he never won. He was divisive figure and ahead of his time, but with the timeless feel to his biggest hits, he still really should’ve bagged an Oscar.
2001, Barry Lyndon, Dr Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange all saw him nominated for Best Director. However, his sole Oscar win in any category was for Best Visual Effects in 2001.
