7. The Lion King

When people talk about The Lion King, they talk about the 1994 original animation, not the Broadway show and not the animated TV series. Well, now they won't be talking about the 2019 remake either.

Expectations were massive ahead of its release, the most loved Disney classic getting a remake by Jon Favreau, what more could be better. Then the reviews came in and they were frankly shocking. Most people would have settled for the film to fall short of the original in truth because those heights were nearly impossible to hit anyway, but to fall so far short that it stuns you, that was an issue.

Once again this was more than likely a story of Favreau being held in a tiny creative box by Disney who probably wanted a shot-for-shot remake. The problem with that is that they got what they wanted but retained none of their patented magic that the original oozed, ending up with a flat and pointless movie that was an insult to those who worked so hard on the original.

The cast too wasn't great in practice, which was odd because on paper they were perfect. Donald Glover, Beyonce and Chiwetel Ejiofor had nothing to them whatsoever. Even James Earl-Jones, who will always be Mufasa, sounded weary and tired. Though at aged 87, this may explain why. Only Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen put in memorable turns, which are overshadowed by the disappointment of film itself.

Nostalgia is a powerful tool though and the film smashed a whopping $1.6 billion at the box-office, meaning a sequel is en-route.
