10 Best Dragons In Film & TV
2. Drogon - Game Of Thrones
Game Of Thrones subverted a lot of fantasy tropes, but one thing it played pretty straight was the dragons. Once mighty creatures who roamed Westeros and took the Targaryens to the throne, their power and population dwindled into extinction before the show even began.
When Daenerys walks into Drogo’s funeral pyre with her three dragon eggs though, the dragons are reborn. Just tiny runts in the palm of her hand at first, across the seasons they grow into mighty beasts. Dany names them Viserion, Rhaegal and Drogon, after the three most influential men in her life, though Drogon gets the majority of love and screen time.
The largest of the three, it’s Drogon that Daenerys rides once the dragons are grown enough. He’s also the one who burns the Night King (to no effect), sacks King’s Landing, carries Dany’s body away and is the only one who lives to the end.
Partially down to budgetary reasons, we don’t see all that much of Drogon and his brothers for much of the middle seasons. This lurking presence only makes them seem more enchanting and compelling though.
It’s a shame how things all worked out, but Drogon remains an iconic part of Westeros.
