10 Best Epic Hollywood Punch-Ups

5. Butch V Harvey (Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid)

Alabama V Virgil True Romance
20th Century Fox

While this may be set up as knife fight, no knives are necessary because Butch (Paul Newman at his charismatic best) is just too damn wily for his hapless foe.

Yet another moment in which the threat is perfectly subverted through a sense of cynical yet playful humour, the fight comes about when Harvey challenges Butch for leadership of the Hole in the Wall Gang.

There are parallels between Indiana Jones and Butch, reluctantly accepting their respective challenges against seemingly superior opponents. In this case, however, the fight is brief, ended with a moment of outrageous sneakiness that delivers a brilliant sucker-punch (or, if you will, kick in the goolies) to both Harvey and the watching audience.

Because, as Harvey found to his cost, there are no rules in a knife fight.
