10 Best Ever Live Action Movie Duologies
3. Jean De Florette & Manon Des Sources
The Jean/Manon duology is a classic multi-generational revenge story that is a cornerstone of French movies and cinema in general. Despite the sequel being set years later, the two movies were shot back to back. This makes them seamless and it doesn't miss a beat going from the first movie to the next.
Jean de Florette tells the tragic story of the titular Jean (Gérard Depardieu), a city-bred hunch back who buys a farm in the province. To draw a wedge in his plans, two locals Le Papet (Yves Montand)and his nephew (Daniel Auteuil) decide to plug the water supplies to Jean's farm, thus starting his struggle and ruining his plans for his beloved farm. It is heartbreaking to see the never-ending disasters that keep on befalling Jean. Depardieu, Montand, Auteuil all play their respective roles to perfection and it is easy to sympathize with the former despise the latter two with a vengeance.
Manon Des Sources deals with Manon, Jean's daughter and her plan to get revenge for her father's death. While the first part works as a greek tragedy about greed and the perils of having a romanticized notion of the innocent countryside. The second part plays out well as a revenge drama where the perpetrators of the first movie get their just desserts in the second. The final twist where Le Papet discovers the truth about Jean completes the cycle of tragedy in the end. Two bonafide classics.
