10 Best Ever Live Action Movie Duologies
4. The Hustler & The Color Of Money
Color of Money is the movie that finally won Paul Newman his well-deserved Oscar. It might seem like a consolation prize now in typical Academy awards fashion, but it would is more than justified if you look at both the movies together. It makes perfect sense as it shows the full growth of the Fast Eddie Felson.
From the talented but naive pool hustler who wants to hit the big leagues by beating Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason in a memorable Oscar-nominated performance) in The Hustler to the older, wiser and more cynical man in the Color of Money, it is quite a performance by Paul Newman.
The Hustler ends up with Eddie beating Fats but at the cost of losing the woman, he loved (played with aching vulnerability by Piper Laurie). The scene where Eddie sees her body is brutal and you know that he is not going to be the same again.
Color of Money continues where The Hustler left off taking place 25 years later. In a role reversal of sorts, he plays a mentor to Tom Cruises young hot-headed talented pool player. Paul Newman is brilliant as the man flirting with screwing over Cruise or helping him be great. Directed by Martin Scorsese, it has all his usual trademarks quirks and though it might now be considered one of his "lesser" works, it still works pretty well as both a sequel and as a solo movie.
