10 Best Female Characters In Sci-Fi Movie History

7. Ava - Ex Machina

The Matrix Trinity
Universal Pictures

Ex Machina is a hauntingly bleak exploration of Artificial Intelligence. The film is sewn in utter Sci-Fi glory, and it feels like a modern classic in the genre. The small cast is a massive part of that as they all work off of each other excellently in this tense film that sees a young programmer help to test the new ground-breaking AI humanoid, Ava.

Calling Ava female is both correct and a fallacy at the same time. Being a creation of science and not biology means that although appearing to be human, she is fundamentally not. This is an integral part of the film's logic as you spend the entire run time debating with yourself whether her intentions are good or merely a means to an end.

Despite her lack of humanity, Ava is an unbelievably phenomenal character. Played flawlessly by Alicia Vikander, this hybrid of science and nature charms you just as much as she charms Caleb. You are completely drawn into everything that she says, and her grip never loosens.

This is an absolute Sci-Fi staple, and that entirely comes down to how compelling, and complicated this character is.
