10 Best Female Characters In Sci-Fi Movie History

5. Uhura - Star Trek

The Matrix Trinity
Paramount

Uhura is a staple in the Star Trek franchise. To clarify, whilst this is discussing the character in general, special attention is being paid to the Zoe Salanda version of the character for a few reasons. Firstly she has more time spent as a film character, only existing in movies and not TV. Secondly, the original Uhura - played by Nichelle Nichols - didn't have quite as big a part to play. What she did for progression and social issues was fantastic, but her presence in the show had less personality.

Uhura in the Star Trek films has distinct confidence that makes her utterly believable in her position. The character has an air of authority about her that gives her an integral job on the enterprise. She acts among a very high standard ensemble, so the fact that Uhura stands out is very impressive.

Finally, her work as an alien language expert gives her a distinct skill that helps the character to feel unique in the science fiction world.
