10 Best Fight Scenes In Cinema History

7. Kuo Cheng Wah Vs Tiger's Goons (Miracles)

Jackie Chan has forged a unique brand of martial arts action over the years. This began with comedy kung fu through his early masterpieces Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master and The Young Master. He then moved on toward high concept stunt led fights with films like Project A and Police Story before breaking into international stardom with his monkey like agility and creative use of environments. While Miracles, a kung fu remake of Frank Capra's Lade for a Day, is in no way Jackie's best film it does feature his best fights. For me it was a very hard decision to decide between his brawl in the night club and his final confrontation with Billy Chow and co in a rope factory so I have cheated massively and been excessively vague with my title. I choose both, as they are just too magnificent not to talk about. The shorter of the two is the night club fight, where Cheng takes on Tiger's thugs using chairs, ceiling fans, door frames and even pottery to win. I say win, in true Jackie Chan style he gets caught out in the end but up until that point it is the definition of poetry in motion. Jackie Chan has always been a fan of the golden era of Hollywood and while, like everyone else, he idolised Bruce Lee, his inspirations were Charlie Chaplin, Gene Kelly and Buster Keaton. It is that same class of physical performance that he perfected during Miracles. The fights are less about martial arts and more about beautifully flowing through the scene in incredible and utterly mind blowing ways. The fight in the rope factory ups the ante massively, adding a healthy dose of peril to the mix. Cheng must not only avoid Tiger's top goons (including the ever dangerous Billy Chow) but huge reels of rope like giant bobbins. Not to mention the fact that much of the action takes place at perilous heights. It is somewhat like those padded indoor play areas you go to as a child, except there is no padding and no safety net. Still, when did danger ever stop Jackie Chan? Jackie Chan is the kind of guy that will play jump rope on rafters that are 50 feet off the ground. He does just that. Yes it is light on real martial arts but Jackie Chan is at his worst when using real martial arts and at his very best when he is using his creativity and unique physical performance skills to blow your mind with stunts and tricks that will have you going "did he really just do that?" The answer is; yes in the 80s he really did just do that.
