10 Best Films Made From Black List Screenplays

6. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Universal Pictures

Co-written by Michael Bacall and Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’s screenplay first appeared on the 2006 Black List with four mentions under the working title ‘Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life’ after the first volume of the Scott Pilgrim graphic stories penned by Bryan O’Malley.

According to Wright, O’Malley was very hands-on while he and Bacall were adapting his comics for the screen and as his Scott Pilgrim series was still ongoing at the time the movie went into production, O’Malley even borrowed a few lines from the screenplay for his comics too.

Wright and Bacall’s original screenplay had a different ending that saw Scott getting back with his ex-girlfriend Knives Chau, but after test audiences disliked that finale it was adapted to be more in line with the ending O’Malley had penned for his books in which Scott and Ramona do get together.

The pair also briefly entertained another alternate ending that pitched Scott as a deranged serial killer who thinks he’s in a video game but is actually going around murdering people at random. Thankfully they went with the ‘guy gets the girl’ ending we know and love.
