5. Why Don't You Just Die!

Why Don't You Just Die, despite its appearances, is one of the most inventive thrillers in ages. The debut film from Russian director Kirill Sokolov is equal parts Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantino filtered through the darkly comic sensibilities of Sam Raimi; a bloody, twisty good time that remains unpredictable right until the closing moments.

It has one of those plots that I wouldn't dream to spoil, but the basic premise essentially sees one man's apartment become the source of a bloody, mythical battle, as family drama spills out the burst stitches of the small cast of characters.

It is ridiculously violent and well-choreographed, but the suspense filmmaking on display is some of the very best of the year as well. For a debut movie, it's imbued with so much confidence, allowing this simple premise to untangle into a web of satisfying payoffs and twists.

If you're on the fence then give it a chance, as you'll be eating out the palm of its horrible, disgusting hand following its killer opening.
