10 Best Films Set During The Great Depression

4. Modern Times

Even though Modern Times is considered to be Charlie Chaplin's last "silent film," it is loaded with sound effects. Chaplin always resisted the onset of the talkie, holding out until the last minute. Here the story may serve as both a commentary on the industrialization of the world and the advent of new technology in film, a medium for which Chaplin is immortalized. Either way, the picture is a fascinating final look at Chaplin's Tramp character, as he is overwhelmed by the screaming locomotive of progress going on all around him.
