When biologist Lena's husband disappears and the opportunity arises to embark upon the last mission he ever underwent, she gladly takes it, accompanied by a team of field specialists into an unreadable entity known as the Shimmer. The Shimmer appears as a dome encapsulating a nearby forest, and as the team delve further into its kaleidoscope depths, the laws of nature begin to fall away around them.
Not necessarily a horror film per say, Annihilation is the eerie exploration of the human psyche when sent out on a suicide mission: looking at the relationship between and reconstruction of ourselves and nature in increasingly unsettling ways. It's a beautiful film to watch, largely captivating for its reimagining of animals within the beautiful oil-slick that is the Shimmer, with each discovery by the team leading them closer and closer to the film's mind-bending finale.
This movie is a thinker, reliant on style as much as substance and often criticised for it in the process. However, it undeniably captures the darker tones for Halloween watching without stepping too far into overt horror. That is of course, until you reach the 'bear' scene...
