Ang Lee's Kung Fu epic is beautiful, romantic and exciting, with some of the best acrobatic stunts seen in film. Jen and Lo are the secondary characters in the story, but their forbidden romance is arguably much more interesting, with their difference in social status and their history all adding to the drama.

Their story is told in a convoluted timeline, showing us their interaction the night before Jen's arranged wedding, then filling in their backstory by flashback. A young Jen was robbed by bandit Lo, who stole her favourite comb, causing her to chase and fight him. Knocked unconscious and kidnapped, Lo nursed her back to health in his cave in the desert.

After several unsuccessful escape attempts, their relationship grew and they fell in love. Filled with guilt, and vowing to win over the respect of her family properly, he finally convinces her to return to her family, leaving her feeling bitter that he has seemingly rejected her.

Back in the present, the wedding goes ahead, but Lo interrupts her bridal procession, causing Jen to have a change of heart and realise she forgives him and wants to be with him. She runs away and goes back to him in the mountains, showing how committed she has become to his happiness by jumping off a bridge, invoking a legend that this will make his dream of them being happy together come true.
