10 Best Films Where The Kidnapper Got The Girl
4. V For Vendetta (2005)
This comic book adaption hits quite close to home as it is easy to see how we are developing into a media-controlled society. The alternate dystopian future is run by a dictatorial government who rule the British people, imprisoning and executing anyone who opposes the desirable traits of their population.
Freedom fighter ‘V’ rescues British Television Network employee Evey Hammond when she is attacked by a group of corrupt government agents. He convinces her that the media is being manipulated by those in power and she helps him escape from the police.
She is subsequently captured and tortured for information about V, eventually saying she would rather die than reveal his location. At this point she learns that V himself had actually kidnapped her in order to test her loyalty to him. He had staged her imprisonment to find out if she would give him up and to free her from her fears of those in power.
This proves to be an intriguing occurrence of Stockholm Syndrome, as she became sympathetic to the cause of her captor without knowing that he was the one who had kidnapped her, or indeed without ever seeing his face!
Although angry, she had already shown her commitment to him, and her perception of society had changed. By the end of the film, V’s death is visibly upsetting to Evey and she goes on to continue with his plan, indicating she had totally switched her loyalty to his cause.
