10 Best Films Where The Kidnapper Got The Girl
3. The World Is Not Enough (1999)
The Stockholm Syndrome in this classic Bond film is so fascinating to watch as you are never quite sure which side Elektra King is actually on until the end of the film.
Kidnapped by antagonist Renard as a teenager, she appears to have returned to her previous life, and claims to have suffered during her time with him. It is only gradually revealed how bitter and betrayed she felt when her father and M decided not to pay her ransom, with her determination for vengeance becoming apparent.
The relationship between Elektra and Renard is an absorbing look at the reaction of a bitter woman rejected by those she loved. The hold he had on her was so strong that he trusted her to go back to her family, and she collaborated with him to extort money from her father, killing him using hidden explosives when Bond returned the money to him.
Elektra's seduction of Bond provides an intriguing level of ambiguity that she may have finally broken free of Renard's influence. But when Bond essentially forces her to choose between him and Renard, asking her to call off the plan, she defiantly tells him to continue, showing that even when faced with death, she was totally devoted to her captor.
