We're friends 'til the end. Hidey-ho. Ha-ha-ha.

Fans of the horror genre know that there are a few key elements that construct these pictures, but there are also some things that are synonymous with the format itself. Murder, mayhem, debauchery, devastation, fright and...friendship? Okay, well maybe friendship isn’t exactly a nailed on trope but a myriad of friendship-based stories can dominate these films from time to time.

Whether these are friends that survive together, thrive together or - even more in alignment with the thematic premises of the films that they appear in - kill together, there is absolutely no denying the significance of these bonds. They keep us invested in these gripping friendships from the sweetest of starts to the bitterest of ends.

These relationships have maintained a place in horror history - and despite the sadistic nature that some entail - have etched a marking into our hearts that may stay there forever. Or at least until something more beautifully twisted comes along to carve a more prominent scar in its place!

10. Andre Toulon And His Puppets - Puppet Master

Low budget cult classics are never exempt from these lists, and why should they be? Especially when the franchise in question has one of the most vitriolic relationships in all of fiction.

Originally beginning life as lifeless shells in the cabinet of puppeteer Andre Toulon, the various puppets perpetrate a multitude of murders over an extensive catalogue of movies. The movies range from horrific to straight-up parodic. However, one thing that never becomes a self-satirising gag is how the proprietor of the strings imbues carnage through his devilish creations.

However, the friendship isn’t unparalleled perfection - the puppet master sporadically becomes the prime target of his murderous troop. The unbridled love and respect he has heavily solidifies that this is a man who clearly cares about his creations, even if sometimes they would rather skin him like the sick animal that he is.

Despite his schemes’ not so humble beginnings revolving around a vicious plot of revenge for his wife - who in the iciest of cold blood was savagely gunned down, it may come as a surprise that he did not design the puppets for malicious purposes. But out of respect for their creator, his prerogative became their mission.

The puppets may not have strings attached, but the interdependence between artist and artwork prevails in their stead.
