5. R.A.B. Was Regulus Black – The Half-Blood Prince And The Deathly Hallows

Sirius Black

There were several times in which Sirius referred to his family’s dark past. Much like the Malfoys, the Black family were synonymous with Slytherin House.

Given that Sirius’ brother had been a Death Eater, he certainly did not spring to mind as someone who would steal one of his master’s Horcruxes. Even with the initials ‘R.A.B.’ as a clue, it was almost impossible to make this connection.

Consequently, when Harry discovered the truth whilst at Grimmauld Place in the final novel, fans of the series were not expecting this reveal.

Yet it made sense. As a Death Eater, Regulus would have had a closer relationship with Voldemort than most, and therefore be likely to discover his secrets. Moreover, Regulus’ death was always somewhat ambiguous. In the fifth novel, Sirius informed Harry that his brother had died after attempting to leave the Death Eaters, but the specific circumstances of his death were always unknown.

Kreacher’s tale of his young master’s death, therefore, was an unexpected yet fascinating chapter in The Deathly Hallows, and is all too often overlooked given the many other revelations in the final novel.
