10 Best Hidden Gem Found Footage Horror Movies
6. The Devil's Doorway (2018)
Horror is at its best when combined with real-life tragedies. This is a film that undoubtedly does that as it takes a genuine historical atrocity, adds a heavy coating of demonic horror to it, and paints a bone-chilling picture.
The Devil's Doorway follows two Catholic priests who are sent to Ireland to investigate a women's asylum that has allegedly housed a miracle. However, once there, they discover the horrendous truth behind the institute.
Now, if you've seen one demonic possession movie, you've seen them all. You can expect all the regular tropes here, with floating people, satanic paraphernalia, and flipped crucifixes galore. But, what sets The Devil's Doorway apart is its exploration of the Magdalene Laundries (also known as Magdalene Asylums) from between the 18th and 20th centuries.
These institutes, run by nuns with the approval of the Roman Catholic Church, were intended to house and treat "fallen women" who had strayed from the path of God. In reality they were built upon systemic abuse, with forced labour and exploitation facing all who ended up there.
Overall, the historical context combined with some massive scares make this a film you don't want to miss.
