2. Satan's Little Helper

Satan's Little Helper

A gloriously knowing black comedy horror, Satan's Little Helper is nothing it not a daft bit of fun that approaches things from a rather unique angle. And let's face it, sometimes chin-stroking 'elevated' horror needs to be put to one side in favour of some daft fun.

As for that unique angle, this 2005 release centres on Dougie, a nine-year-old who's obsessed with a video game where you get to play as one of Satan's helpers. When Dougie stumbles across an eerie masked figure who he thinks is the real Satan, the two soon strike up somewhat of a bond as the kiddo assists this mute maniac on a killing spree.

For Dougie's mother Merrill and sister Jenna - played by a post-Pulp Fiction Amanda Plummer and a pre-Vikings Katheryn Winnick, no less - they believe that it's Alex, Jenna's boyfriend, under the mask and that he's just indulging the boy's vivid imagination. In reality, it's neither Alex nor Satan who's befriended Dougie, but simply some local psychopath who gets a kick out of playing along and having his newfound pal along for the bloody ride.
