10 Best Home Invasion Horror Movies

9. Mother!

Better Watch Out
Paramount PIctures

Darren Aronofsky's latest film mother! is unquestionably one of the most divisive releases of the last few years - a deeply disturbing psychological horror in which a woman (Jennifer Lawrence) and her acclaimed poet husband (Javier Bardem) find their home increasingly preyed upon by fans of the hubby's work.

Though mother! gets no points for subtlety, being an hilariously obvious allegory for both religion and the state of the world today, it is nevertheless bracingly effective as a viscerally discomforting, boxed-in supernatural home invasion horror.

Jennifer Lawrence gives one of her finest performances to date as the title character, put through the wringer by Aronofsky especially during the film's oft-nauseating third act.

What it lacks in realism it nevertheless compensates for with its unforgettable imagery, ranging from thought provoking to shamelessly gross. It's certainly not for everyone, but mother! is nothing if not a one-of-a-kind entry into the genre.
