This one has it all folks. Attractive protagonist couple, rural home, masked assailants, failed investigation and salvation attempts by outside forces, and oh-so-grisly violence. Screenwriting teachers might have you believe that a story needs to have a deeper meaning and that a storyline needs to have motivation to make progress: This happens SO this happens SO this happens all the way until the credits roll. Spoiler alert: this film challenges that line of thinking. Theres no revenge tale, no spurned lovers, no diamond heist. That's the beauty of The Strangers and it's that twist (that there is no big twist or plot reveal) that warrants the high placement on this list. Sometimes people in masks (strangers if you will- see? the title already spoiled it for you) come into your house and hurt you and your loved ones and theres just no rhyme or reason for it. Watch this one for the journey, not the destination.
