10 Best Horror Anthology Movies
9. Tales From The Darkside: The Movie
Fans of the long-running television series Tales From the Darkside were probably jumping for joy when this movie was released in 1990. While it may not have fully lived up to the classic series, the film is a tremendous amount of fun and is full of some really creative scenarios.
The story centres on a young boy called Timmy, captured by a seemingly innocent suburban housewife named Betty, who turns out to be a terrifying witch intent on eating him. But Timmy stalls his demise by telling her three creepy tales, before she makes him into a tasty snack.
These stories are exciting, as they are all inspired by excellent source materials. The first is an adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Lot No. 249, the second is based on Stephen King's short The Cat From Hell - and is directed by George A Romero, a pairing that we will return to later. Then the final tale is a very loose adaptation of the Japanese folkloric spirit, the Yuki-onna.
Each of the shorts is full of fun visual effects, some notable actors - like Julianne Moore and Steve Buscemi - and a pulpy comedy/horror vibe that makes it an entertaining ride.
