3. Takashi Miike - Hostel (2006)
Takashi Miike is the controversial Japanese film director whose movies run the gamut from bizarre, to ultra-violent, to dramatic to (believe it or not) family-friendly. His films have garnered a cult following in the West, predominately because of his tendency to depict scenes of stomach-churning violence and the kind of psychosexual perversion that makes you wince at the thought of intercourse. Miike's films are certainly not for the squeamish, and the slew of 'torture porn' movies that were made in the 2000s suggests that many of these films writers and directors are fans of Miike's films. It's no surprise that Eli Roth, one of the progenitors of the 'torture porn' sub-genre, went so far as to have Miike appear in his 2005 film Hostel, about a group of American backpackers who unwilling become fodder for some seriously deranged folks with deep pockets. As Jay Hernandez's character, Paxton, approaches the Elite Hunting building, Miike (playing himself) exits. As the two pass, Miike warns, "You could spend all your money in there."
Fun Fact: Miike directed the film Imprint, which was a part of Showtime's Masters Of Horror television series. The film never aired, being deemed too disturbing. Mick Garris, the creator of the series described Imprint as "Amazing, but hard even for me to watch...definitely the most disturbing film I've ever seen."
