4. Smiley - Smiley

In Smiley, Ashely discovers she and her friends are being hunted and killed by a lunatic wearing a mask based on a smiley face.

Let's be perfectly clear - Smiley is dreadful. It's cliched, the story is awful, and the dialogue is dire. I mean, you're probably not expecting top-tier quality based on the flimsy premise but Smiley is still worse than you can imagine. (And it's a total waste of the talented Keith David.)

Nevertheless, the smiley mask is a great example of using an innocuous symbol and making it creepy as hell. Valentine and Happy Death Day also had their killer don a cutesy mask but Smiley's face is so unnerving, it's actually difficult to look at.

Not only that, it gets freakier as the film progresses. At first, the eyes and mouth of the mask are stitched on. But later, the seams come loose, causing blood to drip from the lips and eye sockets.

Even though the director, Michael Gallagher, was skeptical that an emoticon could be scary, he created one of the most iconic masks in horror. Shame about the movie, though.
