10 Best Horror Movie Franchises

9. Paranormal Activity

Love them or hate them, found footage movies have become so popular within the horror community, and it all began with Paranormal Activity. Whilst Blair Witch was grossly popular, Paranormal Activity showcased how an entire series could be carved out from such a simple style of filming following its release back in 2007.

Besides Blair Witch, there were very few films that had dabbled in the style of found footage camerawork and viral marketing that Paranormal Activity's success hinged on. The films were cheap, filled to the brim with jump scares and proved to be easy to churn out, with Paranormal Activity 2, 3 and 4 all released between 2010 and 2012.

However, what is undeniable is just how popular the series is within the horror community. Despite there being seven films in the franchise at the time of writing, there has been no sign of fatigue and the series has gone onto earn over thirty times its budget since its beginning. And the popularity is just as palpable to this day, with another entry into the series planned for a Spring 2021 release.
