10 Best Horror Movie Franchises

5. Chucky

With a premise as crazy as this, it's probably unsurprising that Chucky and the Child's Play franchise have dabbled in plenty of weird tones over the years. In fact, the series has swung so wildly from genre to genre that it's probably easiest to think about the franchise, at least in the world of cinema, in two generations of films.

The first three films, despite the plot revolving around a Good Guy doll gone bad, is a genuinely suspenseful, sometimes horrifying, horror movie. Both final boy Andy Barclay and Chucky establish themselves as two of the best characters to come out of the slasher world and, though the occasional quip or pun is still thrown in every now and again, the first two films in particular really do put the scares first.

After the third film in the franchise, the series would become almost parodies of themselves and of the horror world in general. 'Child's Play' was dropped from the title and replaced by Bride and Seed of Chucky, and the films were filled with constant references, puns, wacky possession storylines and whole load of Scream-inspired tropes.

Horror fan, gamer, all round subpar content creator. Strongly believes that Toad is the real hero of the Mario universe, and that we've probably had enough Batman origin stories.
