10 Best Horror Movie Franchises

4. Saw

Saw IX
Lionsgate

Another one of James Wan's masterpieces, Saw is arguably the horror phenomenon of modern times. Pitched from a short movie filmed by Wan in his directorial debut and written by Leigh Whannell, the first Saw was made on a budget of just $1 million, however its ingenious twists, mysteries and iconic villain made it a sensation almost overnight.

Though the suspense and mystery so crucial to the original would quickly be subbed out for a more gory, 'torture porn' tag in the arsenal of films that followed, there is just something so insanely watchable about seeing strangers being pushed to the edge in terrifying traps that continues to keep the series going and impacting the horror genre.

And that isn't even going into how brilliant Tobin Bell is as the Jigsaw Killer. A mastermind in every sense of the word, there's something so elegant about every word he delivers and his complex philosophy and rationale will never fail to stir up a debate. In comparison to the mindless killing zombies present in big franchises such as Halloween or Friday the 13th, he continues to stand out as a striking exception to the rules on horror villains.

Horror fan, gamer, all round subpar content creator. Strongly believes that Toad is the real hero of the Mario universe, and that we've probably had enough Batman origin stories.
