10 Best Horror Movie Monsters NOBODY Talks About
9. Mum - Brain Dead (Dead Alive)
When you hear Peter Jackson's name, you probably think of a groundbreaking filmmaker who revolutionised film thanks to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That's true, but his earlier work was quite a different tale.
Brain Dead is a gore-infested splatter flick that tells the tale of Lionel and his mother. After a Sumatran rat-monkey bites her, she dies and subsequently revives, with a taste for flesh. This leads to an infection amongst their small town, resulting in body horror, epic practical effects, and more blood than you could ever imagine.
The mother is a real contentious character for the film's entirety, as she belittles and bullies our protagonist. This all comes to a head in the climax, when the disgusting infectious disease turns her into a giant, grotesque abomination, looking like the final boss of a video game.
It's truly shocking how Jackson created a monster that was so terrifying yet hilarious. Her bulbous features contrast entirely with the bony flesh that permeates her face and arms, which makes her look like a giant rotting corpse. Despite that harrowing description, she still gets many laughs thanks to her unaltered voice and tongue-in-cheek nudity.
If you haven't watched Brain Dead, then absolutely should.
