10 Best Horror Movie Monsters NOBODY Talks About
6. Helena Markos - Suspiria (2018)
This entry is specifically discussing the remake of the original witch-infested flick, only because the use of Helena Markos in this second version is taken to a whole new level, thanks to the performance from Tilda Swinton, the mystery of her identity, and some truly disgusting practical effects.
Suspiria has no right to be so terrifying, as it's a movie based around a coven of witches who own a modern dance company. That premise could easily describe some silly B-movie schlock. Instead, you're greeted with a haunting, violent and methodical horror that uses clever symbolism and grotesque body horror.
One of the film's biggest plus points is the horrifying Helena Markos - the leading matriarch of the witch coven - who remains in the shadows for most of the flick, unveiling her actual image at the climax. Her distorted body and strained speech patterns truly reflect how ancient the character is, which only serves to make her more frightening, as she easily wraps the rest of the witches around her fingers.
Part of what makes her so spectacular is the build-up to her reveal, as you only see snippets of the villain but feel her presence throughout the movie. With such secrecy, her design had to be perfect, and it's safe to say the filmmakers nailed it.
