The horror series, Tales from the Crypt, was hugely successful, bringing in some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Michael J. Fox, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. As such, it wasn't a surprise when the ghoulish anthology made it to the big screen.

Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight begins with a cheesy horror scenario, as a murderess gloats about her recent kill. She then relaxes in the tub, oblivious that her victim has come back from the dead and is waiting behind her.

Just as he's about to exact his revenge, the camera zooms out to reveal that the entire scenario is taking place in a film studio. The host from the original show, the Cryptkeeper, barges on set, yelling about the actors' unconvincing performances. Draped in stereotypical director garb, it's clear the gleeful ghoul is the one helming this film adaptation. This playful fake-out instantly tells the audience they’re in for something wild, blending horror and humour in a way long-time fans of the show should come to expect.

Although the next 90 minutes are spooky, this meta-opening establishes that we shouldn't take the film that seriously.
