After impressing audiences and critics on the festival circuit in 2023, Stopmotion got its theatrical release in February 2024 before eventually landing on Shudder in May.

The first feature-length film from stop motion animator Robert Morgan, this gleefully grotesque blend of animation and body horror follows animator Ella as she descends into obsessive madness after setting out to create her own stop motion film.

Plagued with uncertainty about her voice as an artist and working under the shadow of her more successful and ruthlessly critical mother, Ella's work becomes increasingly disturbing as events go on. Moreover, the nightmarish monster from her film begins tormenting her in real life, leading to some of this film's most harrowing moments.

Although it's the animation and gnarly gore that are the stars of the show here, Aisling Franciosi's - who also starred in Speak No Evil - appearance as Ella shouldn't be ignored. Rather than going overboard with her portrayal of a tortured artist, Franciosi instead gives a more restrained performance that conveys the tragedy of her character's plight.

The result is one of this year's best horror films.
