10 Best Horror Movie Performances Of 2024 So Far
8. Carolyn Bracken - Oddity
Written and directed by Damien McCarthy - the filmmaker behind Caveat - Oddity is a recent hidden gem from Ireland that's as effectively disquieting as it is strange.
One year after the brutal murder of her twin sister, the film follows Darcy as she arrives at the scene of her sibling's death to figure out the truth behind what really happened. Using her psychic abilities and a creepy wooden mannequin, the secrets Darcy uncovers are far more insidious than the supernatural happenings going on in the remote home.
From the dark interior of its setting, its slow-burn approach to storytelling, and the menacing presence of the mannequin sitting at the kitchen table, Oddity's uneasy atmosphere is a large part of what makes it work so well. However, it's Carolyn Bracken's phenomenal performance as both Darcy and her murdered sister Dani which proves to be the strongest part of this feature.
As fantastic as she is in each role, though, it's Bracekn's turn as Darcy that makes this horror as creepy as it is. By walking the line between eccentric and sinister, viewers are kept on edge, never knowing how much they can trust Darcy.
