4. Amityville II: The Possession

Ouija Origin of Evil
Orion Pictures

Released in 1982, Amityville II: The Possession is the last good Amityville movie. Heck, some would even say it's the only good movie of the 28(!!!!!!) to bear the Amityville name.

While The Amityville Horror focussed on the Lutz family moving into a house where a murder spree had taken place a year prior, The Possession actually jumps back in time and centres on the murder spree in question.

Here, it's the Montelli family - loosely based on the real-life DeFeo family - whose dream home turns into a nightmare.

Headed up by Burt Young - better known as Paulie of Rocky fame - the Montelli clan are soon haunted by something in their new home. That said, Young's Anthony Montelli is just as bad as any evil spirit, for he's an extremely abusive father and husband. Still, it's not Anthony who is corrupted by what resides in the house, for that role is reserved for Jack Magner's Sonny - the eldest of the Montelli children.

By the time Amityville II concludes, the possessed Sonny has had sex with his sister and murdered his parents and all three siblings. And throughout all of that, Damiano Damiani's picture consistently goes hard on the gore and splatter.
