10 Best Horror Movie Remakes Of All Time
1. The Thing (1982)
John Carpenter made quite a few all-time great horror films in his heyday: Halloween, The Fog, Christine, etc. But it's hard to argue that any of them will ever top the brilliance of his remake of The Thing.
Like a great many of the remakes on this list, Carpenter sought to remake Howard Hawke's The Thing From Another Planet because he loved it so much. Heck, he even gave the film a little cameo in Halloween, playing on the television.
But what makes Carpenter's version so great is the way it embodies existential dread. As The Thing takes over the team's arctic station, no one can be trusted, not even the protagonist. Anyone or anything could be The Thing, and thus the audience is forced to question every movement or side glance just as much as the characters are. To top this off, it is a film full of incendiary performances with legendary performers like Kurt Russel and Wilford Brimley.
The film also features some of the most insane practical effects ever put to screen. The various scenes of characters attempting to destroy the different hosts of The Thing are jaw-dropping in terms of what they managed to capture in camera, long before CGI was an option. The film also has a pitch-perfect ending, in which even as the credits roll, the audience is left unsure of exactly who or what is left of The Thing.
